Aim: To provide an introduction to and training for facilitators in the AVP program. AVP teaches the basics of nonviolent interaction and creative conflict resolution to help people deal with conflict and violence in their lives.

Synopsis: The Alternatives to Violence Project Inc is a private, non-profit educational corporation that is funded entirely by private donations. AVP is present in over 30 countries with courses held in the community, in prisons and in educational establishments.

These workshops empower individuals to liberate themselves and others from the burden of violence. The fundamental belief of AVP is that there is a power for peace and good in everyone, and that this power has the ability to transform violence. AVP builds on a spiritual basis of respecting and caring for self and others.

The workshop will be based on the belief that we are all teachers and all learners so they are interactive encouraging each participant to learn and to share. Tapping the learning resource of life experience, participants practice responding to conflict creatively. The learning is powerful and lasting as it empowers and motivates personal responsibility for change in each individual.

This experiential workshop will include three levels:

  • Basic workshop which learns from personal experiences of affirmation, communication, cooperation and creative conflict resolution.
  • Advanced workshop which focuses on the underlying causes of violence both in ourselves and in the world we live in. These sessions concentrate on working by consensus.
  • Training for Facilitation focuses on facilitation skills, developing team building, leadership and group process skills.
